Lucon: A connected lamp for connecting people

In a world where social distancing and Zoom fatigue are the new normal, Lucon is here to connect you with your fellow human beings. A handheld light that turns strangers into companions, Lucon creates a small, anonymous community that breaks through unwanted solitude.

With Lucon, you share your presence with other members of the community with a simple gesture, akin to holding hands. Along with the lamp’s calming glow, Lucon provides a new real-time and screen-free way to relate with others. Through Lucon, you can feel connected, receive support, and uplift others by communicating with light and touch.

Inspiration, With social distancing and lockdowns prevalent, we’ve been increasingly isolated and disconnected. We’ve been forced to adapt to this “new normal.” Visiting our loved ones is off-limits in order to protect them, and Zoom calls always leave an empty feeling. We’ve forgotten the delight of meeting someone new or an act of kindness between strangers. Living alone and working remotely, I found it tough to maintain my mood, my creativity, my productivity, and my relationships.

People are not designed for this lifestyle. That’s why we created Lucon because we want to live in a world where we are connected as human beings.

How Lucon Works, Once connected to wifi, a simple tap turns the light on and off, highlighting Lucon's beautiful form. Holding Lucon for a few seconds activates the other Lucon lamps in the community, while yours glows slowly. When others respond by holding their lamp, all the lamps will glow brighter together.

We also discovered that slow, relaxed, and mindful breathing can help reduce stress and improve our health. Therefore, we designed a calming light pattern to help you breath. All-together, Lucon creates a real-time, yet screen-free way to communicate with others.

Design process, Inspired by the calming sensation of holding hands, I explored how we can incorporate this feeling into Lucon. Created numerous sketches and mock-ups, and tested physical models in people’s hands. Found the pressure points when hands touch, which we used to determine Lucon’s arc shape. When you interact with Lucon you feel like holding another persons' hand between yours. Also, the unique arc geometry makes the device universal for all hand sizes.

Lucon is an emotional product which carries marks from nature in the design. Organic shape, soft irregular waves used for creating the feeling that nature makes us feel.
